Sippy Cup Hell
I am already sick of broth. I have been straining the broth from Chicken Noodle Cup of Soup and it takes forever to drink it. Plus it gets cold fast so I have to keep zapping it. I am enjoying warm tea in the middle of the night and mornings. I am "sipping" lots of water and watered down Gatorade, Apple Juice, and Cranberry Juice. I can't even eat a whole popsicle at one sitting! The most amazing thing is that I am NOT even hungry! The smell of food makes me ill. I have to go in the bedroom when Alan and Savannah cook or eat anything that has a strong odor. Other than that, I feel great.
I felt a little confused about how much liquid I should be getting in my body. I am sipping all the time while awake.
I am afraid of getting dehydrated and learning to sip and not just drink a big gulp of something was very hard. However, the sharp pain you get from drinking too fast makes one think before you drink. "One ounce of liquid at a time" has been my mantra the last 3 days. I bought one Sippy Cup and it will be given a proper good-bye in a few weeks.
I have my follow-up appointment this Friday and will then get to eat cream of wheat, mashed potatoes, and pudding. One ounce servings and will have to stop drinking before and after I eat.
When I weighed in before surgery I was at 273. Before I left the hospital I was back up to 286. I can't wait until Friday to get my official one week weigh in.
Finally, I HAVE NORMAL ANKLES! They are not swollen and I have been off all water pills since surgery. Is that a "WOW" moment?

Hi there! I've been reading your blog, and it looks like I've tuned in at just the right time. How exciting for you!!
I'm Pre-op, and hope to have surgery in January/February of 2007.
Not that I know first-hand, but they say those first few weeks are the toughest. I can't even imagine not feeling hunger. I sometimes think I will be the one person the surgery doesn't work on.
I'm definitely blogrolling you so that I can keep up with your progress.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Donna
PS: Where in Cali are you? My Mom lives in Orange County (Irvine)

Susan~
Sounds like you are doing everything right. I remember sipping during every waking moment at this point in the game.
I couldn't sit before the computer though. How's the pain level? Is the family taking good care of you?
Thinking of you lots~

Sipping can be terribly frustrating. I remember crying for weeks and months after my surgery because I missed being able to gulp down a glass of water. Or anything else for that matter.
One thing I found wonderful and continue to enjoy to this day is herbal mint tea (decaf). My favorite is Tazo. I load it up with Splenda and drink it all the time. The mint soothes your stomach and aids with digestion which may help those sickly feelings and aversion to certain smells.
Unless of course the mint smell gets to you.
It's also great iced!

Everything sounds totally NORMAL! But what I wish somebody had told me? IT WON'T LAST! I remember thinking I was doomed to tiny sips forever! It takes awhile but you'll be able to drink normally again! And food will smell good again (unfortunately)! For now, enjoy the FREEDOM FROM FOOD!

Perfectly normal, and Marybest is right ... it doesn't last. I gulp things now, and I'm less than 3 months out, as you know.
By the way, when are sipping broths soups or teas, get yourself one of those cup hot plates intended for use in the office. It's just al ittle heated disk that keeps coffee warm. You'll be suprised how handy it will be, for everything from hot liquids, to a small saucer of food. I actually put my dinner saucer on it, and it keeps my dinner warm over the hour I may take to eat it.
Cheers to you!

I was a big fan of Campbell's Soup In Hand...great size and pre-strained.
Congratulations on making it through your first weeks!
